When a guy makes the decision to propose to his special lady, it’s time to go shopping for a diamond ring. One of the most common questions I get is how much money you are supposed to spend on an engagement ring.
Well, first off – it’s gonna cost you! Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but they are very expensive friends. Even more expensive than your college roommate that would drink all your beer and would somehow “forget” to help pay the cable bill each month. So you know it’s going to be expensive. But how much is expensive? There really isn’t a set-in-stone rule about how much you should spend on an engagement ring. However I suggest taking the following into consideration when you are setting your budget.
First, don’t spend more than you can afford. There’s no point in spending $20,000 on a ring if it is going to put you into so much debt that you won’t have any money to pay for the wedding. Pick an amount that you can handle and stick to it. It’s ok to put a portion of the ring on credit, just make sure you can handle the monthly payments and please – make sure the interest rate is reasonable. I suggest having a minimum of 25% of the price that you can pay upfront. This way you pay a good chunk of it right off the bat and have a lower amount left to pay off.

5k would get you a decent 1 ct diamond give or take the cut she wants i dont think its to pricey id say its a good price if you guys can afford it with out going into debt over it. if not get her a cheaper one there a beautiful styles for as low as 500

Proposals, raised spending to mark Valentine's Day
NEW YORK - Consumers will be digging deeper into their pockets to buy flowers, gift cards and chocolates on Valentine's Day with average spending expected to rise 8% over last year to nearly $200.
And along with their expanding wallets 4 million Americans are expected to pop the question or receive a proposal on Feb 14.
"We've seen a consistent trend of consumers saying they will spend more, from holiday shopping to 2012 travel plans, and spending plans for Feb 14 are no exception," said Sonali Chakravorti, vice president at American Express.
In its latest spending and savings tracker American Express questioned 2,000 adults across the United States to gauge how much and on what consumers will be spending their money on Cupid's big day.
Nearly half of people said they intend to celebrate at a favorite restaurant, 7% more than last year. Flowers are still the most popular gift for a Valentine, followed by gift cards, jewelry and electronics.
