Justice ministry to conduct civic education countrywide
JUSTICE minister Mutula Kilonzo has challenged civil servants to read and understand the contents of the constitution. Mutula said it is necessary for Kenyans to realise and enjoy the true meaning and values of the constitution. “There is need to have in place a continuous, comprehensive, relevant and sustainable citizen education programme,” he said.
He was speaking at the launch of Public Sector Civic Forums for senior public officers at the Kenya Institute of Administration in Nairobi. In a speech read on his behalf by assistant minister William Cheptumo, Mutula hailed the constitution saying its provisions will give meaning to democratic governance and help spur progress in the country.
Sh200 million has been set aside to facilitate civic education countrywide and empower the citizenry ahead of general election slated for later this year. “It is important for people to understand the process of implementation and the role of the government towards them,” Mutula said. Mutula further called on the public to take keen interest in the document which he said will empower them and enable them demand their rights. “It is through civic education programmes that citizens will cultivate and nurture a culture of participating in a democracy,” he said.
