Despite fierce competition (and the return of its all-star cast) there were no surprises when it came to crowning last night’s winner of Dancing With the Stars . After receiving two perfect scores and some spirited comments from the judges for their Argentine tango and Jive, Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and her partner Derek Hough were awarded the mirror ball trophy, marking a second win for Derek.
“I was more nervous because people said, ‘You are a shoe-in. It was like ‘Don’t jinx me!’” says Nicole. Adds Derek: “We never took anything for granted. “If we came first, it just meant we had to work harder the next week and then harder and harder. Staying on top is very hard. We just pushed ourselves and it’s been the most amazing experience, just phenomenal. I am so proud of everything we have accomplished this season and to see this little girl kill it, I’m so happy!”

What makes Romney tough to cover
In today's New York Magazine, John Heilemann breaks down the reasons that the press is rooting for Newt Gingrich: a love of drama, a desire for page views, Romney's discipline versus Gingrich's off-the-cuff sensationalism and affinity for "the candidate-journalist tango."
On this last point, a few reporters down in Florida tell me that the media isn't entirely to blame.
Part of the problem is that Romney's inaccessibility makes him harder to cover. Network correspondents covering Gingrich are more likely to get on the air than those covering Romney, one reporter notes, because Gingrich is more willing to go on air spontaneously. Correspondents covering Romney, who have to make more formal requests to sit down with the candidate, can lose airtime to Gingrich correspondents for the very same reason.
Romney may prove more outgoing as the campaign progresses. On the plane today, he threw out potato chips to reporters (see above) and even gave the L.A. Times' Maeve Reston a birthday cake. But his on air interviews remain carefully structured events, and his speeches carefully scripted. So it's not just that the media has "antipathy to the kind of disciplined, unspontaneous, inaccessible campaign that Romney is running," as Heilemann argues -- though that is probably true. It's that Romney hasn't given reporters much to work with.
