Wedding registry etiquette and or giving cash?
The most correct conduct is to buy a thoughtful gift of lasting value and have it delivered to the bride’s home prior to the wedding.
Giving cash is correct only if the couple is very much younger than you, or if your relationship to them is one of customer-to-server or employer-to-employee. Giving cash to someone with whom your relationship is more equal or more personal is patronizing and depersonalizing. However, you need only worry about that if your friend has an unusual degree of self-respect. Nowadays money is indeed more important to most people.
You can do one or the other. There is NO reason that you should feel that you need to buy a wedding present and give them money. As a bride to be I would like to get cash OR stuff off our registry as it does take a far bit of time to set them up.
As for the amount of money to give or the cost of the gift go with what you can afford to give and do not get bullied into going over it.
Everyone seems to be afraid to tell the truth on this one, and the truth is that cash is tacky. There are some people who do it anyway, but that doesn’t change the rightness or wrongness of it.
