Years ago, Dave Tollfeldt's parents gave him a Canadian maple-leaf gold coin, which he figures was probably worth about $150.
On Tuesday, he sold it at Bellevue Rare Coins for $1,760.
With the price of gold topping $1,700 an ounce, those with gold coins and jewelry are flocking to shops to sell gold pieces.
Business is so brisk at Bellevue Rare Coins that the company stenciled a sign on its ticket machine that gives out numbers to the customers: "Recent high metal prices are triggering high demand. We appreciate your patience."
Seated around a counter and treated to coffee and licorice, customers waited for their turn to sell their coins and jewelry.
Gold futures rose $29.80, or 1.7 percent, to $1,743 per ounce after setting a record price of $1,782.50 earlier Tuesday.
Tollfeldt said he sold his Canadian coin because he's unemployed and his truck is in the shop. "When (gold) passed the $1,700 mark, that was nuts. This is crazy," he said. "I don't see it getting much higher." Now he wants to persuade his wife to sell her gold jewelry.
